Indigenous Futurism

My background with science fiction is simple. I basically wrote the stories I always wanted to see growing up, but did not. At 15, I got tired of waiting for someone to write them, so I started a small Fantasy story for a High School Project that turned into a gigantic epic series that would span my entire life and take 28 years to finish.

In Spring 2023, Chandera came out just in time to help lead the way for Indigenous Futurism. A new literary movement that has been long needed: Native American Science Fiction and Fantasy. There are great leaders of the movement like Grace Dillion and her wonderful Indigenous Sci-Fi Anthology, Rebecca Roanhorse and her amazing Black Sun Series, Darcy Little Badger and her brilliant children's stories, and Chickaloonies, a cool Alaska Native graphic novel series by Casey Silver and Dimi Macheras, The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline, and many more that are coming now etc. We finally arrived!

After going through three small publishers, I decided to self-published Chandera to protect the vision and characters. In 2023-2024, I sent news of the series all over Indian Country (What we Natives call all places in North America that has a significant Native American population). Now in 2025, I am promoting and marketing the book to the wider world: the general society.

My Native characters reflect the strong, resilient and successful Native people I met in real life that were not reflected in modern Native literature and film. In this new literary movement of Indigenous Futurisms, I want to get it right and ensure my stories are filled with strong Native characters and Non-Native characters. There not hardly enough stories like this about my people, so in a way, the world doesn't really know us yet. Books that give Native Youth and Youth the world over, strong Indigenous heroes. I feel privileged to live and be a leader in this new literary and film movement of portraying Natives better in Sci-Fi/Fantasy. We are seeing indigenous characters in space operas like the Expanse with Camina Drummer and hopefully, we will be shown better in our distant future.

As a lifelong storyteller, I hope you enjoy this epic series as much as I enjoyed writing it and still like reading it now and then.

Mahsi (Thank you)
